The scented sandwich is another old English recipe, which involves covering the bread and butter with edible fresh flowers overnight, where they impart a subtle scent.
These are delicate-tasting sandwiches, as the name implies. They can be made with any edible flower, though “edible” is clearly the operative word here. Rose, nasturtium, and violet are all lovely choices.
Scented sandwiches are not particularly sweet, but their fragrance definitely makes them somewhat so, hence the inclusion here. A flowery sandwich must come under the category of dessert, surely.
Makes 1
INGREDIENTS
Butter, at room temperature
2 slices white bread
Edible fresh rose petals, nasturtiums or violets
Butter 1 slice of bread, lay the petals or flowers on it, then butter the second slice of bread and sandwich them together. Cover and leave in a cool place overnight.
In the morning, remove and discard the flowers, except for a few petals to grace the inside of the sandwich. Remove the crusts and cut into fingers, then serve.
